Fawn Workman NP has personal, first hand knowledge of the struggle as person with obesity.

There is a paradigm shift in the understanding of the chronic disease of obesity. Did you know obesity is now classified as a disease, just like Hypertension and Diabetes? Not only that, but obesity consequences includes contributing to the risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, high blood pressure/ Hypertension, high cholesterol/ Dyslipidemia. We need to treat the root cause first (or at least at the same time).....Obesity.

Obesity is NOT (just) a motivation and will power issue- in fact, if that is present, it's usually just a minor factor. A mentor has said "Overeating does not cause obesity. Obesity causes overeating." The brain can increase the hormones of appetite, decrease the hormones of fullness and satiety, and affect the metabolism to counteract the ability to lose (and harder) maintain a normal weight. Alterations in the gut microbiome, stress, medications that are obesogenic, and so many other factors can 'turn on' the genetic susceptibility a person has to have adipos-opathy. This can lead to chronic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction and lipotoxicty. These are just some serious metabolic dysfunctions and adaptations that make it harder and harder to lose fat and maintain the loss.

Lifestyle interventions ( eating changes, alcohol avoidance, increased exercise) are really good things that we support! but- done alone for obesity, often does not lead to sustained long term weight loss.

At this time, we are primarily seeing young to middle aged adults. Teen patients will be assessed and accepted on a limited case by case basis.

We do not accept new patients with Medicare (even if you have a secondary insurance). Unfortunately, because of this, we do not see patients above the age of 62 or those with serious mental or physical illness that have Medicare.

Fawn Workman is a psychiatric nurse practitioner and utilizes supportive therapy with an eclectic mix of CBT, motivational interviewing, and interpersonal therapy in visits that usually also address or check-in on medication, supplements, etc. Psychotherapy alone is possible but would need to be considered on a case by case basis.

We also have a variety of counseling colleagues of colleagues that we may suggest or refer.

First, we need to explore what's going on- and if medications are even an option, or the best option. Medications (and supplements!) have risks, benefits, and potential side effects. The decision to start medications is made together between patient and provider when the reasoning to proceed is felt to be worth the risk. Some side effects are more common than others; some are very rare but potentially dangerous. And, just because something is 'natural', doesn't mean it is safe. Even arsenic is natural, right? However, we do support/ recommend the use of evidence- informed and generally regarded as safe (GRAS) supplements/ vitamins/ minerals to support mood and general health.

Additionally, we are big proponents of non-medication options for many situations, too. A healthy lifestyle, stress reduction, walking, physical activity, nutrition, sleep, medical condition stabilization, mindfulness/ meditation, prayer, social support, behavioral therapies, and counseling are very, very important. Small steps in a positive direction, over time, will get you far!
